Magmatism at oceanic core complexes on the ultraslow Southwest Indian Ridge: Insights from near-seafloor magnetics

چکیده
Abstract Oceanic core complexes (OCCs) and detachment faults play a key role in crustal accretion at slow ultraslow spreading centers. We investigated the effect of different magma supply three OCCs Southwest Indian Ridge using high-resolution deep-sea bathymetric magnetic data. The average equivalent thickness extrusive basalt deduced from anomalies, proxy for supply, decreases west to east, Yuhuang (49.25°E) Longqi (49.65°E) Junhui (51.75°E) OCCs. Conversely, serpentinite outcrops become more abundant, domal OCC morphology flattens as footwall rotation (measured by magnetization vector inclination) increases, hydrothermal evidence becomes sparse. Combined with results amagmatic easternmost Ridge, our study shows that controls character evolution on Ridge.

Structure of oceanic core complexes: Constraints from seafloor gravity measurements made at the Atlantis Massif
[1] Using the DSV Alvin, the relative seafloor gravimeter ROVDOG was deployed at 18 sites on the Atlantis Massif (located at the ridge-transform intersection of the MidAtlantic Ridge and the Atlantis Transform Fault near 30 N, 42 W). These data along with previously collected shipboard gravity and bathymetry provide constraints on the density structure of this oceanic core complex. A series of ...
متن کاملMicrobial Community Structure of Deep-sea Hydrothermal Vents on the Ultraslow Spreading Southwest Indian Ridge
Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) is a typical oceanic ultraslow spreading ridge with intensive hydrothermal activities. The microbial communities in hydrothermal fields including primary producers to support the entire ecosystem by utilizing geochemical energy generated from rock-seawater interactions. Here we have examined the microbial community structures on four hydrothermal vents from SWIR, r...
متن کاملJurassic zircons from the Southwest Indian Ridge
The existence of ancient rocks in present mid-ocean ridges have long been observed but received less attention. Here we report the discovery of zircons with both reasonably young ages of about 5 Ma and abnormally old ages of approximate 180 Ma from two evolved gabbroic rocks that were dredged from the Southwest Indian Ridge (SWIR) in the Gallieni fracture zone. U-Pb and Lu-Hf isotope analyses o...

Ecology and biogeography of megafauna and macrofauna at the first known deep-sea hydrothermal vents on the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge
The Southwest Indian Ridge is the longest section of very slow to ultraslow-spreading seafloor in the global mid-ocean ridge system, but the biogeography and ecology of its hydrothermal vent fauna are previously unknown. We collected 21 macro- and megafaunal taxa during the first Remotely Operated Vehicle dives to the Longqi vent field at 37° 47'S 49° 39'E, depth 2800 m. Six species are not yet...
